Squirrels

There are many different species of squirrels but the most popular in our area are fox squirrels (Sciurus niger), gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis), red squirrels (Tamiasciurus vulgaris), northern flying squirrels (Glaucomys sabrinus), and southern flying squirrels (Glaucomys volans). Squirrels are active from dawn til dusk with most of their activity occurring in the early morning and then again in mid-afternoon. These rodents typically nest in tree cavities, attics, or crawl spaces with common entries being roof vents, louvre vents, soffit vents, and rotten fascia boards. Of all small mammals, squirrels, relative to their body size, have the largest brains making them the most intelligent of rodents. Flying squirrels are very small in size with broad flat tails, enlarged eyes, and a patagium, which is extended folds of skin from wrist to ankle enabling them to fly. Trapping includes cage traps for live trap and removal and the traps are usually set in the squirrels line of travel outside of the den entrance.
