Groundhogs
The woochuck (Marmota monax), or commonly referred to as the "groundhog," is a member of the squirrel family. Groundhogs have adapted well to the land usage alterations by humans. Their habitats include: forested areas, decks, sheds, patio slabs, gardens, rock walls, and open farmlands surrounded by wooded and/or bushy areas. Woodchucks can excavate their holes or burrows in a matter of minutes using their long curved claws. Groundhogs are strict herbivores that forage on fruits, grasses, and plants in flower or vegetable gardens. By creating tunnels and burrows the woodchuck can be considered a hazardous nuisance, causing damages to farm equipment, livestock, and bystanders. Groundhogs are occasional carriers of rabies, tuaremia, and sylvatic plague.
